This video takes an example report from the BBC about knife crime, and looks at how the preconceived agenda for the report, suggesting a link between levels of stop-and-search by the Police and levels of knife crime, is repeatedly challenged and yet the agenda persists throughout the report and even beyond it.
The video also looks at how closed questions are used which reinforces the agenda preconception and also how there seems to be an intention to ensure conflict arises about such issues, as if ‘dramatising’ stories, as would be the case for a fictional event. However, these are current affairs issues relating to real lives and so the approach of introducing conflict may serve a purpose of ‘entertainment’ but it doesn’t help viewers/listeners to understand issues more comprehensively.
