This piece takes its inspiration from Francesco Petrarch's sonnet "Pace non trovo", a poem about being pulled in two directions at once, torn between peace and turmoil, hope and fear, fire and ice.
Liszt runs with that idea, taking the main melody and building it up, more and more, until it reaches a fever pitch of crashing octaves in both hands. From there, a quiet, searching passage draws you back down, and the piece closes with only echoes of the original theme, like a storm that's finally passed, but left its mark.
