Commercial for SPACE DUST candy.
In 1975 General Foods introduced a new kind of popping candy we know as POP ROCKS. Pop Rocks are small pieces of hard candy with carbon dioxide bubbles trapped inside. When these candies come in contact with moisture they dissolves and the gas inside the bubbles is released, causing the characteristic crackling and fizzing sounds. The candy came in several flavors and was very popular upon its release. In 1976 General Foods released a new candy called SPACE DUST. It was basically Pop Rocks, just crushed up into a fine powder. Where Pop Rocks focused on the popping in your mouth gimmick, Space Dust was more of a prolonged fizzling and focused more on the taste. Specifically its "out of this world" flavors, which included Galactic Grape, Cosmic Cherry, and Orbiting Orange. It was a huge success at first, but it didn't take long for its luck to change.
Many found the Space Dust name to be dangerously similar to "Angel Dust," the street name for the drug PCP. In response to concern from customers, General Foods decided to rename the product. Space Dust was rebranded COSMIC CANDY allowing it to retain the same outerspace-theme. Despite the name change, Cosmic Candy was not fully able to convince parents it was safe for children. A concern that grew once rumors suggested that if you ate Pop Rocks or Cosmic Candy while drinking soda, the candy would react with the soda and cause your stomach to explode. This was completely untrue, but the rumors caused a major backlash against the candy, and many stores stopped carrying it. Despite General Foods standing by the safety of its product and a major effort to convince the public the rumor was not true, Cosmic Candy and Pop Rocks were discontinued. Pop Rocks would be revived in the 1990s and is still produced today. Cosmic Candy and Space Dust however have not seen a revival.
This video is perfectly suitable for, but not intended for children. It has been shared for adults who were children when the commercial originated. My intent is to preserve or refresh the memories of childhoods from the past and offer some enjoyable nostalgia.
