A virtual travel to Japan. Roland Hagenberg will be on-site and guide through Japanese architecture, culture and way of life.
Day 1: Tuesday, October 27, 9am (Vienna) – 5pm (Kyoto).
Writer, artist and photographer Roland Hagenberg guides through a traditional wooden Japanese house (minka) in Kyoto – its style and elements unchanged for hundreds of years (English and German). Why is it that contemporary architects still integrate “engawa” (the connecting space between outside and indoors) in their works? Why does a modern family still use the same bathtub water one after another – and who enters first? Why is heating not that important (with minus degrees in winter) – as it is in the West? Why an earthen hole in the middle of a tatami room? What does this lifestyle mean for contemporary art? How to discourage ghosts? How do you properly prepare your bed (futon)? Why are houses long stretched and narrow? What are the procedures if you rent such a house? When do you replace paper screens? Where do you place ashes of ancestors? How did someone find your house before there was GPS (there are no street numbers in the traditional sense)?
During the presentation, Roland will also talk to a surprise guest.
Guests: Ceramics artist: Toraku Morisato and Michael Keferl
