The American newspaper The Washington Post has reported that U.S. diplomats posted in Bangladesh believe the United States is increasing its engagement with Jamaat-e-Islami, as Washington expects the party to emerge as a major political force in the upcoming elections. This development is a matter of concern for India. In India, Jamaat-e-Islami is widely seen as a hardline ideological group with close links to Pakistan, and it has faced serious allegations related to violence during the formation of Bangladesh in 1971, as well as later involvement in inciting attacks against Hindus. The Donald Trump administration now believes that Jamaat could gain significant strength in the February elections, which is why the U.S. is building ties with the party. India fears that if Jamaat becomes more powerful, pressure on Hindus in Bangladesh will increase, extremist ideology will be encouraged, and this could have a direct impact on India’s borders and internal security. From New Delhi’s perspective, U.S. engagement with Jamaat appears to be ignoring India’s concerns, making the situation unfavorable for India.
