In late September 1992, after filming Poetic Justice in Los Angeles, Janet Jackson confirmed her return to Greater Minneapolis, after recording Best Things In Life Are Free for the Mo' Money Soundtrack in April 1992 to work on her fifth studio album in suburban Edina, Minnesota.
Lodging in Jimmy Jam's new 30,000 sq ft. Lake Minnetonka mansion, she commuted between there and the new Flyte Tyme Studios in Edina. In October 1992, she recorded the first two tracks, Again and If. A Fall 1992 visit from a Virgin Exec, heard the rough cut and championed it as the first single for early 1993 release.
By February 1993, the janet. project was wrapping up with Chuck D on New Agenda, following a label meeting which solidified "If" as the first single in March 1993. In the end, If became the second single after the newly recorded "That's The Way Love Goes" literally took the lead and was pushed out to late April release.
