If you ever purpose to trade in shares that are listed on the Nairobi Stock Exchange you are required to open a CDS Account.
So let's start by defining the abbreviation that will use in this video
1. CDS: Central Depository System
2. CDSC: Central Depository and Settlement Corporation
3. CDA: Central Depository Agent
What is CDA
It is either a Stockbroker, an Investment Bank or a Custodian Bank who has been authorized by CDSC to open accounts in CDS on behalf of investors.
What is CDSC
It is a limited liability Company approved by the Capital Markets Authority to provide automated clearing, delivery and settlement facilities in respect of transactions carried out at Nairobi Securities Exchange as well as holding of listed and non listed securities including other documents of title on behalf of investors.
Depository
A depository is like a bank, which holds securities (like shares, bonds, Government Securities among others) for investors in electronic form. Besides holding securities, a depository also provides services related to transactions in securities.
What Is a CDS Account?
It is an electronic account that holds shares only.
CDS number is unique to each investor and it can either be opened by an individual or on joint basis.
• Once the CDS account has been opened, the investor will be notified of the CDS account number via email as provided on the CDS document.
• For you to successfully open a CDS account you will need a CDA or open via Central Bank of Kenya

Requirement for opening a CDS
1. Fill CDS Form( you get if from your chosen CDA)
2. 2 recent colour passport-sized photo
3. KRA Pin
4. National ID or Passport
5. Proof of Residence
6. Proof of income in form of pay slip or bank statement.
How long will it take to open a CDS Account, once all the requirement are received it will take 7 working days.
you can open CDS accounts through as many stockbrokers as you want. However, when an account is opened using one stockbroker, only that stockbroker can transact on that account
