N64 emulation battle: PSP vs 3DS vs New 3DS vs PS vita

Daedalusx64 is an open-source Nintendo 64 emulator initially developed for PSP and Linux systems. Later it was ported to other platforms such as 3DS and PS vita. The performance varies greatly depending on the processing, features and architecture of each console, for example, PSP having the same architecture as the N64 (both consoles use a CPU from the same family of MIPS R4000 processors) which makes your work much easier, 3DS, on the other hand, when handling an ARM architecture (based on ARMv6), has a CPU slightly slower than that of PSP and also does not allow to efficiently handle programming styles like other processors, which is why it is practically the opposite of PSP , the result is that the games run too slow and are unplayable, in New 3DS on the other hand, having a better rendering almost 4 times better than the conventional 3DS, the games run at a speed at par or slightly higher compared to PSP and finally we have the PS vita where it has better performance thanks to the fact that it is technically the most powerful, since its ARM architecture is more recent (based on ARMv7 Cortex) and it has the double le of memory (10 times more VRAM compared to 3DS) where the only disadvantage it has is with respect to the limiting factor of the SoC frequency.

With all this, PS vita wins the battle but only with respect to the performance factor, in compatibility it is in 2nd place only behind PSP since its version of Daedalusx64 has been developed for years while the versions of 3DS and PS vita are more recent and currently no new versions have come out in the last 6 months. We will have to wait a long time to see if there are new advances of these emulators.

Comparativa en pantalla dividida de cara en cara de la emulación de N64 en las consolas PSP, 3DS, new 3DS y PS vita.

Daedalusx64 es un emulador de Nintendo 64 de código abierto desarrollado principalmente para PSP y Linux. Posteriormente fue porteado a otras plataformas como 3DS y PS vita. El desempeño varía mucho dependiendo del procesamiento, prestaciones y arquitectura de cada consola, por ejemplo, PSP al poseer la misma arquitectura que la N64 (ambas consolas utilizan una CPU de la misma familia de procesadores MIPS R4000) lo cual le facilita mucho el trabajo, 3DS por su parte al manejar una arquitectura ARM (basada en ARMv6), tiene una CPU ligeramente más lenta que la de PSP y además no permite manejar de forma eficiente los estilos de programación como otros procesadores por lo cual es prácticamente todo lo contrario a PSP, el resultado es que los juegos se ejecutan demasiado lento y son injugables, en New 3DS por su parte al tener un mejor procesamiento casi 4 veces mejor que la 3DS convencional, los juegos corren a una velocidad a la par o ligeramente superior comparado con PSP y por último tenemos a la PS vita donde tiene mejor desempeño gracias a que es técnicamente la más potente, pues su arquitectura ARM es más reciente (basada en ARMv7 Cortex) y tiene el doble de memoria (10 veces más VRAM comparado con 3DS) donde la única desventaja que tiene es con respecto al factor limitante de la frecuencia del SoC.

Con todo esto, PS vita gana la batalla pero solo con respecto al factor de velocidad, en compatibilidad queda en 2o puesto sólo por detras de PSP ya que su versión de Daedalusx64 lleva desarrollada hace años mientras que las versiones de 3DS y PS vita son más recientes y actualmente no han salido nuevas versiones en los últimos 6 meses. Habrá que esperar un buen rato para ver si hay nuevos avances de dichos emuladores.
