Technical Prototype Demo for the Orbital Refractions system. It features Dr Leonardo Barilaro's performance of Listen, the official soundtrack for the Polymath Festival 2.0.
The visualization, developed by Laura Alice Bracken, is a real-time blend of Dr. Barilaro’s acoustic performance and electronic space sounds.
The visual core utilizes a 3D point-cloud model of the International Space Station (ISS) rendered with Gaussian particles. The particle dynamics, including mass, velocity, and the rate of dissolution/reformation, are modulated in real-time using live hand-tracking data from Dr Barilaro's performance. Furthermore, light parameters within the visual system are algorithmically controlled by performance metrics (e.g., keyboard zone, hand speed) to generate dynamic, aurora-like refraction effects.

'Listen' is the official soundtrack for the Polymath Festival 2.0, composed by Dr Leonardo Barilaro - The Space Pianist.
The piece tells a story of cosmic connection and invites you on a journey, beginning with the raw sound of solar wind from a NASA probe. It travels through an atmospheric blend of piano and electronic textures, like magnetic fields and granular layers, before arriving at the stunning sound of the Aurora Borealis, recorded from Earth's orbit.
These two authentic recordings from Space meet in the middle, representing the beautiful interference that connects our Sun to our planet.
