Introduction:- Compressor discharge temperatures reflect all of the latent heat absorbed in the evaporator, the evaporator superheat, all of the suction line superheat, and all of the heat of compression and motor generated heat at the compressor. It is at the discharge temperature where all of this heat is accumulated and now must start to be rejected in the discharge line and condenser.
Problems because of high discharge line temperature
Maximum discharge line temperature is 225 °F or 107 °C
If discharge temperature goes higher than 225 °F the system may start to fail from worn rings
Acid formation
Oil break down
Oil start vaporize at 350 °F
Discharge valve temperature is 75 °F more than discharge line temperature
Serious over heating problems happen
Discharge Superheat
Discharge Superheat = Discharge line temperature at compressor – Temperature of saturated liquid
Example: Discharge Line Temperature = 170 °FTemperature of saturated liquid = 110°F
Discharge Superheat = 170 – 110
Discharge Superheat = 60°F
It is to be checked when machine is running at 80% LOAD or higher
Discharge line temperature should be measure 6” from compressor or service valve
