This video is about Newborns and Lip Tie
The band of tissue from the inside of the upper lip to the gums is the labial (or lip) frenulum (or frenum)
If the band is tight and the upper lip can't get into a good position during feeds, breastfeeding may be difficult
Some possible issues:
painful latch
feeds that take a long time
baby pops off the breast a lot
feeds that are really frequent
trouble with weight gain
Best way to tell if the upper lip frenulum is an issue is how breastfeeding is going. It's much less about how the frenulum looks.
A lip tie can be released with a simple office procedure that has minimal risk and discomfort.
Stretching exercises are recommended afterwards to prevent scar tissue and re-attachment.
Lip ties are less common than tongue ties, but some babies have both.
For questions about lip ties and teeth development, see attached video by pediatric dentist, Michelle Kelman, DDS.
