This is the epigraph to Byrne a novel in verse, by Anthony Burgess. It is worth taking a look at. The initials, F.X.E., at the end are those of Francis Xavier Enderby, a character in some other novels (prose novels) by Burgess. Enderby is a poet and "his" poems appear in those other books. This self-referencing quotation and a persona being treated as if a living individual rather than a fictional character reminds me of Vladimir Nabokov's verse novel Pale Fire and the works of Fernando Pessoa.
‘Prudence, prudence,’ the pigeons call,
‘Scorpions lurk in the gilded meadow,
An eye is embossed on the island wall.
The running tap casts a static shadow.’
‘Caution, caution,’ the rooks proclaim,
‘The dear departed, the weeping widow,
Will meet in you in the core of flame.
The running tap casts a static shadow.’
‘Act, act!’ the ducks give voice.
Enjoy the widow in the meadow.
Drain the sacrament of choice.
The running tap casts a static shadow.’
F.X.E.
