Ethiopia has officially inaugurated the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), Africa’s largest hydropower project and one of the 20 biggest in the world. Completed after 14 years, the $5 billion project—funded entirely from local sources—has become a symbol of national pride for over 120 million Ethiopians.
With an installed capacity of 5.15 GW, GERD is set to double Ethiopia’s electricity output, expand energy access to millions, and power industries across the nation, where nearly 45% of people still live without electricity.
However, the project is not without controversy. Egypt, which depends on the Nile River for 97% of its water supply, views the dam as an existential threat. Sudan has also expressed concerns, warning that the dam could disrupt water flows and heighten regional instability.
The inauguration, attended by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, marks both a historic achievement for Ethiopia and a potential flashpoint in regional geopolitics.
