There are battery chargers on the market that claim to be able to recharge alkaline batteries. But do they really work? I have experimented with one such charger from Viatek. Model RE02. It appear to charge alkaline batteries, but the voltage drifts down after words and the amount of energy stored is limited. The charger would incorrectly report batteries as fully charged when they were not. This was especially true with old batteries that had increased internal resistance.
When the RE02 charger was used with NiMH batteries, they became very hot and measured 1.35 volts. I believe they are being charged too fast and to a voltage that is too high.
With NiCd batteries, the charger takes the battery through a complete discharge-recharge cycle. Presumably to prevent memory effect. The charger does not have the option of bypassing the discharge step.
UPDATE: Most of the alkaline batteries than I re-charged have drifted back down in voltage over the next several weeks to months. None of them held a full charge. It seems that if you re-charge an alkaline, you should probably use it immediately. About a third of the alkaline batteries that I re-charged ended up leaking. I am even more convinced that re-charging alkaline batteries is not a good idea.
There is an updated video available in which I quantify the amount of energy in an alkaline battery before and after recharging. • Alkaline Battery Charger. Is it Real?
