The last lineup of the Mahavishnu Orchestra in concert, unified and uniformly virtuosic. This is an absolute must for any lover of jazz fusion! Filmed at the Estival Jazz Festival in Lugano, Switzerland, this 1986 concert documents the third great stint (since its creation in 1971) of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, which was revived by John McLaughlin after the Shakti digression and the formation of the trio with Al Di Meola and Paco de Lucía. After the departure of Mitchel Forman and Billy Cobham, the great guitarist is then accompanied by Bill Evans on sax, Jim Beard on keyboards, Dany Gottlieb on percussion and Jonas Hellborg on bass. Tightly-knit and uniformly virtuosic, this quintet is equally capable of executing refined arabesques or abruptly shifting into high gear. The tracklist, foreshadowing the seventh and last Mahavishnu album (*Adventures in Radioland*), which would come out the following year, features compositions by John McLaughlin ("Jozy"), Bill Evans ("The Alternative Man") and Jim Beard ("The Wait" and the magnificent "Diana"), while Jonas Hellborg shines in his solo in "It’s the Pits". The bass player represents one of the great attractions of the group, notably because he presides over a double-neck instrument (with and without frets), which he commissioned from English luthier Wal in 1983. With a nod to "The Dance of Maya", a composition that figures on the first Mahavishnu album in 1971, John McLaughlin ultimately situates this concert within the historic continuity of the orchestra, which despite the many changes in its lineup, made a definitive mark for some fifteen years.
