Conferences can be intimidating, exhausting, and overwhelming, but they can also shape a careers.
In this video, I reflect on how scientific conferences have influenced my own path, from attending my first British Ecological Society meeting as a student to building long-term collaborations and friendships. I speak with researchers at different career stages about their experiences, anxieties, and practical tips for making the most of conferences.
We discuss networking, posters, talks, social events, early-career nerves, parenting at conferences, and why showing up, even when it’s uncomfortable, really matters. Although the examples come from ecology and conservation, the lessons apply across science and far beyond academia.
