Johann Nepomuk Hummel's Piano Concerto No. 2 in A minor, Op. 85 was written in 1816 and published in Vienna in 1821. Unlike his earlier piano concerti, which closely followed the model of Mozart's, the A minor concerto, like the B minor Concerto, Op. 89, is written in a proto-Romantic style that anticipates the later stylistic developments of composers such as Frédéric Chopin and Felix Mendelssohn.

Chopin discovered Hummel’s music when studying with Żywny and Elsner; Hummel’s sonatas and concertos were present in his concert repertoire when he was very young. In 1828 Hummel, whom Chopin met later in Vienna, performed in Warsaw. By then, Chopin already knew Hummel’s work very well – as all his published works were available in Warsaw – and highly appreciated him as a composer. For young Chopin, the performances of the virtuosos of the brilliant style such as Hummel were a strong artistic inspiration.
