Some patients mistakenly believe that acne scars include the red marks and other skin discolorations that are often left over after an acne breakout heals. However, these red and dark spots are not true acne scars. They are usually just temporary reminders of a previous acne breakout. They almost always fade away with time as long as new acne breakouts are prevented. Actual acne scars include ice pick scars, boxcar scars, rolling scars and hypertrophic scars. Accutane does not treat these true acne scars which are permanent. However, true acne scars often contain red or dark discolorations within them and by preventing new breakouts with Accutane, the discolorations within the scars can eventually fade away which makes the scars less noticeable. In this way, Accutane can actually improve the appearance of acne scars.
