As the Marines braced for a massive Banzai charge on Guadalcanal, they didn’t depend on tanks—they transformed a so-called “useless” toy gun into a battlefield shotgun.
The Problem: The 37 mm M-three anti-tank gun was widely ridiculed. Its armor-piercing shells bounced off enemy tanks in Europe, earning it nicknames like “Pea Shooter” and “Door Knocker.” Critics called it the wrong weapon for the wrong war, and some officers nearly ordered the nine-hundred-pound burden abandoned on the beach.
The Risk: When faced with a human-wave assault, gun crews threw the rulebook aside. They removed the heavy steel shields in a risky “suicide configuration” to aim faster and loaded the prohibited M-two canister rounds. Packed with steel balls like oversized shotgun shells, these rounds turned the gun into a devastating anti-personnel weapon—forcing fully exposed crews to hold their position against thousands of charging attackers.
