Michael Haydn is said to have completed this 'Missa (Hispanica) a due Chori e quatro Voci concertanti' in Salzburg on August 4, 1786. It is known that it was performed on June 24, 1792, at Kremsmünster Abbey in Upper Austria, under the composer's direction. Another performance took place at the University of Salzburg on June 3, 1796, also under Haydn's direction. For a long time, it was believed that the work dated from that year and that the Salzburg performance was the first. To explain the title 'Missa Hispanica' (Spanish Mass), there is little evidence. The only text mentioning that the mass was intended for Spain is found in the chronicles of Saint-Peter's Church in Salzburg:

"Our concertmaster Michel Haiden conducted a new mass composed by him for Spain, which required the presence of about sixty musicians divided into three choirs. Amateurs took up a collection and covered the expenses of the two rehearsals and today's performance. There was a large crowd, and this composition received unreserved applause."

Today, a letter is known from a Spanish nobleman living in Vienna, a certain Carlos Alejandro de Lelis, who regularly sent music to a countess-duchess of Benavente y Osuna, the first lady-in-waiting at the court of Madrid. This letter, dated April 22, 1789, mentions, among other works, a mass by Michael Haydn. It is probably this Missa Hispanica, of which no trace has been found in Spain, as the musical archives of the countess-duchess of Benavente have disappeared. However, it is known with certainty that Michael Haydn sent his Missa Hispanica to Stockholm when he became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy in the 18th century. It was first performed on July 3, 1966, at the Holland Festival, and its first performance in France took place on October 30, 1991, at the Lille Festival.
