STORYLINE:

A group of squatters in the Manila suburb of Bicutan clashed with riot police on Monday.

The clashes began when the squatters tried to stop the police from entering an area where squatter houses are being demolished.

The residents waved placards and chanted slogans at riot police, as they tried to block the road leading to the squatter area.

Tyres were left burning on the road, creating thick black smoke to prevent the riot police and demolition machinery from entering the street.

The initial stand-off quickly turned violent as the two sides began pushing each other.

The police came under fire from rocks and debris, and in turn fired tear gas into the crowd.

The police eventually managed to regain control.

The demolition in Bicutan began last Thursday and kicked off clashes between squatter residents and the demolition team.

More than 100 families are affected by the ongoing demolition, which residents say is illegal.
