Using only natural sand collected from different regions of India and other countries, he has created over 350 sand portraits without a single artificial colour.

His work reveals something often overlooked. Nature itself holds nearly 29 shades of sand, waiting to be observed, understood, and respected. One of his most detailed works, a portrait of Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, took 40 days to complete, shaped with patience rather than speed.

Beyond his practice as an artist, Krishnan Nair spent decades as an art teacher, encouraging students to work with soil and natural materials. He believed that art rooted in the earth helps children develop a deeper respect for the land they belong to.
