If you've fitted a ZF8HP automatic transmission to a Land Rover Td5, this video is for you!
When we installed a ZF8HP to our awesome Td5 'Mighty Ninety' in December, we found an issue with the torque figures being sent from the Td5 ECU to the CANTCU. The Fix, to make it drive nicer was to adjust the Torque Correction Factor on the CANTCU and this did indeed work, but we was never entirely comfortable with how it behaved, as the reported Engine Torque would seemingly 'Overflow', having peaked, returning to zero and then climbing again.
The Devil is in the Data.
Not being entirely happy with what was happening, and the presence of a terrifying vibration when accelerating in 7th and 8th gears, we exchanged emails with CANFormance, asking questions and testing solutions. We'd established that the Td5 ECU was in fact sending the engine torque figures onto the CAN messages, in a rather unusual way. We got Andrew Revill involved, who is the creator of our Awesome Power Flash software, and we, Andrew and Kenneth at CANFormance exchanged many emails and a lot of data.
So what's the fix?
The way the Td5 ECU encodes its torque values was not as was first thought, with the CANTCU seemingly being a 'Plug & Play' fitment. This turned out not to be the case and in fact was dangerous to the 8HP transmission!
The fix was to convert the CAN message in the Td5 software so that it sends the raw, unprocessed Engine Torque figure to the CANTCU, so that the transmission controller can operate normally with the ZF Transmission Control Unit, and keep everything safe and predictable.
If the gearbox knows how much torque it's handling from the engine, it can operate with the correct pressures etc to give an OEM level of operation, and the difference is significant in terms of how the Td5 drives with this fix.
An important aspect of this whole conversion is that the CANTCU needs to know the torque profile of the engine its working with. If the torque characteristics don't match up, the gearbox will operate outside of its normal parameters and inevitable damage could occur. For this reason, we strongly recommend we set up every 8HP conversion we do, on our dyno. The data we harvest from our dyno, gives us the perfect reference points for us to program into the Td5 ECU and for us to know that the conversion is correctly calibrated and will deliver the best possible performance, with the engine and transmission working in harmony.
Be under no illusion that if you've already got an 8HP installed on your Td5, that all is well, as it absolutely won't! YOU NEED THIS FIX as a matter of urgency, so contact your tuner to get it sorted and keep your ZF8HP transmission safe and working as it should.
