Covid-19 dominated 2020, yet more individuals treated their hearing loss in 2020 than any year ever before! This is likely due to the extra difficulty created by wearing face masks during the Pandemic. Since Audiology clinics were shut down for up to several months, they had to get creative, and one way they were able to continuously provide hearing treatment was with the use of Remote Care services. Remote Care, or Remote Programming, is the ability to make hearing aid adjustments without having to go into a clinic. If the Covid pandemic would have started even a few years earlier, Remote Care would not have been available.

In general, 2020 was a bad year, however it wasn't all bad. If Hearing Restoration is your thing, a Company called Frequency Therapeutics showed promise with their Phase 1a Clinical Trial of their FX-322 drug which is intended to regenerate or regrow hair cells inside the cochlea. They are expected to report results of their Phase 2a Clinical Trials in the Second Quarter of 2021.

If Tinnitus Relief is what you are looking for, a company called Otonomy completed their Phase I/II clinical trial in 2020 with a Phase 2 clinic trial starting in the first quarter of 2021. If successful, their drug OTO-313 may be able to reduce Tinnitus Loudness and Tinnitus Annoyance.

2019 didn't show much as far as new hearing aid technologies, but 2020 was amazing. Several major hearing aid manufacturers including Phonak, ReSound, Starkey, & Widex all released amazing new hearing aids in 2020 despite the pandemic. 2021 will show more innovation as several manufacturers are slated to release new technology early in the year.

Perhaps the best thing about 2020 is that consumers have started to DEMAND that their Hearing Care Providers follow Best Practices like Real Ear Measurement when fitting them with hearing aids. In 2021, these numbers will continue to grow as consumers continue to realize that the WAY a hearing aid is fit and programmed is way more important than the actual hearing aid you use if you want to hear your best.

What about Over the Counter Hearing aids that were supposed have guidelines issued by the FDA in August of 2020? Well, nobody knows what is going on with OTC hearing aids, not even the FDA. At this point, we've got people delaying Hearing Loss Treatment for what is going on 4 years now thinking that more affordable hearing aid options are just around the corner. At the current pace, we may not see OTC hearing aids in 2021 either, so don't get your hopes up. If you are someone who is waiting for OTC to come out before you treat your hearing loss, you may want to consider other affordable options before you continue living with an increased risk of Cognitive Decline, Dementia, Depression, Social Isolation, and increased risk of Falling.

Of course, if you are looking for affordable options online, look out for the MANY Online Hearing Aid Scam companies out there that blatantly steal your money by refusing to refund your money even after you returning their junky hearing aids. Don't thing the FDA or FTC has your back because, as usual, they do nothing to actually protect consumers with hearing loss.
