🔹In 2024, Pa Auk Sayadawgyi resided at Dhammadāyāda Monastery, the branch of Pa Auk in Nepal. After the vassa, he made a pilgrimage to Lumbhini.

During this trip, he visited holy sites such as the Mahā Devi Temple where the Buddha was born, the Mahāvana where the Buddha delivered Mahāsamaya Sutta (The Great Assembly Discourse); the ancient palace of Kapilavatthu, and more.

🔹Especially on this occasion, with the precious permission and support of the Lumbini Development Trust, Sayadawgyi was able to continue and formally initiate the Sala Tree Plantation Project — a project that had been proposed a few years ago.

Originally, Sayadawgyi planned to plant only 3,400 trees on the available plot of land. But after completing this stage, he was inspired to expand the project, setting the aspiration to plant about 16.600 trees more, so that finally total of 20,000 trees on about 22 hectares (1 hecta = 10.000 m2).

🔹The purpose of this project is deeply meaningful: in ancient times, the Buddha was born in a sala grove. Sayadawgyi wishes to restore this sacred scene by planting sala trees — both as a remembrance of the Buddha’s birth and as a gift of freshness and shade for future generations.

In the Buddhist teachings, planting trees is regarded as a wholesome act (kusala). The Buddha Himself praised those who plant trees, as they provide shade, shelter, fruits, and coolness to humans and animals — acts that bring benefit to countless beings.
In the Vanaropa Sutta (SN 1.47 ), the Buddha said:
Those who plant groves, who build bridges, who provide drinking places and wells, those who give shelter and resting places —their merit grows by day and by night.”(Samyutta Nikāya 1.47 – Vanaropa Sutta)

Such wholesome deeds benefit countless beings, bringing comfort and peace to many. In this same spirit, the Sala Plantation Project is not only an offering to honor the Buddha’s birthplace, but also a living expression of compassion — planting shade, peace, and life for generations to come.

May the merit of planting trees bring abundant blessings, peace, and happiness.

May Pa Auk Sayadawgyi live long, like a big tree providing shade for all his disciples.
