It's Hard to believe it has been Ten years since the passing of Canadian Music Legend Stompin' Tom Connors.
Tom passed away March 6, 2013 at his home in Ballinafad.
On March 13, 2013 the Nation mourned together as Tom's celebration of Life was held at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.
YourTV was humbled and honoured to have been asked to provide the TV coverage and produce Mr. Connors' Public Memorial and Celebration of Life.
The live Broadcast was made available to the Nation from the Peterborough Memorial Centre on March 13, 2013. Tommy Hunter attended, and the celebration included speeches by former Governor General Adrienne Clarkson and former NHL Goaltender and MP, The Honourable Ken Dryden.
Before his death, Connors had personally selected the artists who would perform at his ceremony: Billy Macinnis, Tim Hus, Dave Bidini, Damhnait Doyle, among others.
Tom had a few special connections with Peterborough;
He was famous for highlighting and singing about people and places across Canada.
He wrote and recorded “The Peterborough Postman”.
Tom’s unique method of stomping a board to keep time to the music earned him the nicknames "that stompin' guy", or "Stomper" but It wasn't until Canada’s 100th Birthday on July 1, 1967 the name "Stompin Tom” was first used, when a waiter at the King George Hotel, Boyd MacDonald, introduced him as ”Stompin" Tom Connors” on the Peterborough stage to a very enthusiastic audience. Shortly after Tom officially had the name registered and trademarked.
