cousin marriages in the US, and most western countries, were still common into the 19th century, it's not until late 19th century that the science (genetics, specifically) starts to tell us why it's not such a good idea after all. Sure, we all know about the European royalty, but other social elites did it too, for much the same reasons (to preserve family wealth and maintain social ties), and it wasn't until surprisingly recently that western nations mostly abandoned the idea.
