The British, aiming to crush Mahdist resistance in eastern Sudan and relieve Egyptian garrisons, marched inland from the Red Sea port of Suakin. After a tough victory at the Battle of El Teb, they encountered Mahdist forces again at Tamai.
Graham’s force of around 4,000 men, including infantry, artillery, and naval brigades, formed two square formations—a common tactic against massed attacks. During the battle, one square was temporarily broken by a fierce Mahdist assault, leading to close-quarters fighting. Despite the shock, British discipline held, and they regrouped, repelling the attackers with rifle fire and artillery.
