Hi everybody and welcome to this fourth and final video in a series titled What Is The British Constitution & What Is British Common Law? Origins In English Common Law.
In this chapter, we will be looking at how the Anglo-Saxon law we looked at in part 3 evolves after the Norman conquest into English Common Law, the foundation of all common law and the legal system of the UK. Building upon the nature of Anglo-Saxon law, successive Norman monarchs will turn this law into an English common law, practiced across the whole of England the same, from a central place. Most importantly of all, we will look at the reforms of Henry II which established so many of the country's contemporary institutions and practices.
In this series we are exploring what these two things are by looking at the history and fundamental nature of their character. We'll go back to Anglo-Saxon England, to see how Anglo-Saxon politics and Anglo-Saxon culture were really the same thing, and that through the idea of an English nation, Anglo-Saxon history gave birth to a unique constitution, that would later form the basis for a unique British nation.
What is the English constitution? What is English Common Law? What is Common Law for that matter!? Through English constitutional history, we can explore this development of English constitutional law and how this blossomed into British constitutional history and British constitutional law. From this original English constitution came a system that would draw many to it and produce a new nation and country of Anglo-British and Anglo-Britain, home to the Anglo-British constitution.
