The United States and Iran have signed a 14-point preliminary peace agreement titled the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding,” marking a major step toward ending more than three months of conflict in West Asia.

The agreement was digitally signed on June 17 by U.S. President Donald Trump in France and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Tehran. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif signed the deal on June 18 as guarantor, stating that it came into effect immediately.

The MoU includes reopening of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran, lifting of the U.S. naval blockade, and a complete halt to military operations, including in Lebanon. It also allows for Iran’s nuclear material dilution under IAEA supervision.

A formal ceremony involving the US, Iran, Pakistan, and Qatar is scheduled in Switzerland on June 19.

The agreement also includes oil waivers for Iran and a $300 billion reconstruction plan backed by the US and regional partners.

The development has triggered strong political reactions, with discussions around Pakistan’s growing diplomatic role in the region.
