Did Karl Marx really "abandon" philosophy for economics? And is modern analytic philosophy actually as "neutral" and "apolitical" as it claims to be?
In this episode, we are joined by Professor Christoph Schuringa to discuss a massive year in his scholarship, marked by the release of two essential new books: Karl Marx and the Actualization of Philosophy (Cambridge University Press) and A Social History of Analytic Philosophy (Verso). We explore the thread that connects them: the idea that philosophy is never just an abstract exercise, but a force deeply shaped by—and meant to shape—the social world.
In this video, we discuss:
Marx’s True Project: Why Capital isn't a rejection of philosophy, but its final "actualization."
The Myth of Neutrality: How McCarthyism and Cold War politics scrubbed the radical roots out of analytic philosophy to create the "apolitical" status quo we see in universities today.
The Hegemony of Logic: How the dominant methods of modern philosophy act as an ideological defense of liberalism.
