Black K-pop fans have been here since the beginning. Kenyah became one in 2008 — before the genre crossed over, before anyone called it mainstream, and long before it was easy to explain.
By college it wasn't a hobby anymore. She majored in Korean, became president of the Korean Students Association, and spent years trying to bridge the tension between Black culture and Korean culture on her campus.
Then she was quietly asked to leave.
Host Jameelah Calhoun sits down with her sister, Kenyah, to talk about K-pop and Black cultural identity, what it actually costs to build a life inside a community that wasn't built for you, and what happens when the group you gave the most to doesn't fully claim you back.
