D Locrian is the 7th mode of Eb major. The scale degrees are root, b2, b3, 4, b5, b6, b7.The full chord is Dm7b5/11/b13 with the b9 as the "avoid note". You don't want that note in the chord, because it takes away from the m7b5 sound (also known as "half-diminished). You will also often see the symbol ø for m7b5 (this is different from "o" with a seven or "o7" which means it is a diminished 7th chord, this will be discussed in context of the diminished scale).
The Locrian scale is often perceived as elusive, but if you're looking for a more mercurial and unpredictable sound that will surprise your audience, Locrian certainly is an option!!
The scale is written over a min7b5 pentatonic scale (open white circles) with
the scale degrees of root, b3, b5, b6 and b7. Using this as your grid will help
you outline the m7b5 sound anywhere on the neck. When you combine the
white and the black circles you have the full scale with the b2 (Eb) as the
avoid note. This does not mean you can't play Eb (tension b9) - you can play
Eb as a passing tone or neighbor note, but you can't sit on it because it will
make your improvisation sound more like Eb major than D Locrian. For now
it's best to jam along with the track, try different areas on the neck (look at
the scale D Locrian fretboard diagram for suggested fingerings), come up
with simple melodies or also use the guitar riff as building material for solos.
For comping (accompaniment like strumming chords), start the play along
track without guitar and organ and play each chord using the chord exercise
rhythm pattern and go up the neck first with the highest note on the B-string,
then the high E-string (like on the chord diagram chart). You will be playing a
D Locrian chord scale with all chords being a version of Dm7b5. If that's too
easy, then try jumping around and exploring different areas you may not be
familiar with. And most importantly, have fun!!
