In the early 80s or 90s Full-time jobs & Part-time jobs were equal in numbers. Afterward Part-time jobs are going to be greater in quantity with the passage of time. This trend resultant into a new types of jobs i.e. Gig jobs or Gig economy. Where there are no permanent setup or fixed time schedule to do your task. It’s only the output do required. You may do it either from your home or, from your campus or elsewhere but when the task is done as per employer’s requirement, you will be paid and afterwards none of you have any formal or informal connection. In another words its assignment based payment.

Day by day size of Gig economy is becoming larger around the globe. In 2010 global size of Gig economy was $204 billion, it increased into $347 billion in 2021 and it is projected that, global size of Gig economy will be $455 in 2023. Such a rapid growth of Gig economy demands extra attention to it’s from the government around the world. Today in this interview Professor Dr. Dilip Nandkeolyar, Director (Industry Research) & HoD, Department of Marketing Universal Business School, Karjat, India emphasized upon need for specialization to grape the opportunities of Gig economy.

According to Dr. Dilip, Gig economy is the heaven of experts and there are no rooms for the mediocre & backbenchers. Therefore he advised to identify your passion and be specialized in it. One should be specialized in one particular job rather go for generalized education. He also said that, government & private sector stakeholders can play the role of catalyst. He said the Gig economy will open up enormous opportunities without political boundaries around the globe. Therefore we must be expert in IT & ITES, we shall emphasize upon technical & Technological mastering to grape this enormous opportunities of Gig jobs.

He said Gig economy will be a key ways to reduce overhead cost of the companies around the world. Therefore there will be no large offices in near future rather everybody will go for contract dealings to complete respective tasks in time. Gig economy is a new opportunity for both the employers and the professionals to earn more and enjoy freedom. There will be no CPF or Gratuity short of arrangements in the upcoming days of Gig economy. Which will contribute in reducing companies overhead costs and make them more competitive.

Dr. Dilip also said that, there will be no job security in the Gig economy where experts will earn more but backbenchers will be in trouble. Therefore government shall come up with insurance facilities for every citizen of country. Similarly there will no after retirement benefits in the Gig economic age. Therefore government may impose higher rate of taxes but ensure transparent use of it for universal pension benefits for all. Managing this universal pension scheme will be another challenge. To make it hassle free and transparent good governance has to be ensured.
