The Dayton-Wright RB-1 Racer was one of the most unusual racing aircraft ever built in the early years of aviation. Designed by Howard Max Rinehart and Milton C. Baumann for the 1920 Gordon Bennett Cup, this American speed machine introduced several groundbreaking ideas. The aircraft featured a variable camber wing, a retractable landing gear system, and a streamlined monocoque fuselage built around a balsa core. Despite impressive performance during training flights in France, mechanical problems forced the RB-1 to withdraw from the historic race. Today the aircraft survives in The Henry Ford Museum, representing one of the boldest experiments in early aircraft engineering.
