Torrey Pines Beach is situated north of La Jolla along the Pacific Coast Highway. It is a popular visitors destination during the day, but has a history of attached violence during the evening hours. In 1978, Jim Alt and his girlfriend Barbara Nantais decided to sleep under the stars near lifeguard tower 7. Both would be assaulted by an unknown attacker. He survived. She didn’t. During the summer of 1984, 14-year old Claire Hough visited her grandparents. As she was strolling the beach at night, she was savagely attacked and killed. Investigators thought the killings might be related although six years apart.
A second tragedy occurred when retired forensics investigator Kevin Brown was accused as one of the culprits. The shame behind his status of prime suspect prompted him to commit suicide. He was later exonerated. In 1923, a sensational murder occurred to 20-year old dancer Frieda Mann who was known as the Butterfly Dancer. Her body washed ashore at Torrey Shores. Following two trials and endless public speculations, no one would be convicted of her murder.
