We started out the day in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and got on the road to make our way to the Black Hills of South Dakota, with an essential stop at the world famous Boar's Nest, as we do every year before making our way into town.
The Boar’s Nest Roadhouse is a Rustic Timber Framed Eclectic Barn Style Restaurant Bar & Grill located in the Black Hills along side the Beautiful Whitetail Creek on Highway 85/14A, 2 Miles West of Lead, SD and a short scenic run from Spearfish or Sturgis. Come & Enjoy Hot Rods Cars, Classic Hot Rods & the Custom Cars & Bikes that can always be found sitting in and around the Boar’s Nest.
Sturgis Rally History
The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is a motorcycle rally held annually in Sturgis, South Dakota, and the surrounding Black Hills region of the United States. It began in 1938 by a group of Indian Motorcycle riders and was originally held for stunts and races. Attendance has historically been around 500,000 people, reaching a high of over 700,000 in 2015. The event takes place over 10 days and generates around $800 million in annual revenue.
The Sturgis Rally has been held every year, with exceptions during World War II. For instance, from 1942 to 1944, the event was not held due to gasoline rationing.
Originally the rally was a two-day event.
To serve the needs of future rally attendees, the Buffalo Chip Campground was established outside of town. The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally venue first hosted campers in 1982. Over the years, the venue evolved to include vendors, campsites, cabins and stages, becoming one of the biggest entertainment hubs of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
For many years, the rally was a seven-day event starting on a Monday during the first full week of August.
Cheyenne, Wyoming
The City of Cheyenne had its beginning in 1867, when the Union Pacific Railroad came through on its way to the west coast. The town site was first surveyed by General Grenville Dodge and was named for an Indian tribe that roamed the area (originally called ‘Shey’ an’ nah’, belonging to the tribe of Alogonquian, the largest family of Indians on the North American Continent). Settlement came so fast that the nickname "Magic City of the Plains" was adopted.
