Saint Sebastian (c. 256–288) was born in Narbonne, Gaul, and raised in Milan. He rose to the rank of captain in the Praetorian Guard, serving under emperors Diocletian and Maximian, all while secretly practicing his Christian faith. Known for his courage, he encouraged and supported fellow believers imprisoned for refusing to renounce Christ. When his faith was discovered, he was condemned and tied to a post, shot with arrows by his own soldiers, and left for dead. Found alive, he was nursed back to health by the Christian widow Irene. Rather than flee, he boldly confronted Diocletian, denouncing the emperor’s cruelty. For this defiance, he was beaten to death with clubs, his body thrown into Rome’s sewers before Christians recovered and buried him in the catacombs along the Appian Way.
Venerated as a symbol of steadfast faith, Sebastian became one of the most popular early Christian martyrs. He is honored as the patron saint of soldiers, archers, athletes, and plague victims, invoked for strength, courage, and healing in times of suffering.
