Target Audience
Physicians, advanced practiced providers and nurses in pediatric primary care (pediatrics, family medicine, general
practice, internal medicine/pediatrics); and emergency medicine.
Statement of Need
In Kentucky, 1 in 100 babies are born with a congenital heart defect and are under the ongoing care of a pediatric
cardiologist. These patients also are managed by primary care providers for their routine care. It is critical for primary
care providers to be aware of how to work in tandem with pediatric cardiologists for the ongoing management of these
patients, and to be able to identify any red flags that may present during a routine visit. Additionally, many acquired
cardiac conditions present during the pediatric years. Proper screening and referring in a timely manner can improve
patient outcomes.
Objectives
At the conclusion of this offering, the participant will be able to:
1. Identify role of rehabilitation medicine physician in management of congenital heart disease patients.
2. Discuss basics of cardiac rehabilitation and how picture of frailty can play role in this patient population.
3. Examine benefit of rehabilitation integration with multidisciplinary teams.
