Pain is the universal human experience. The host opens Episode 17 with this truth weighing on her - witnessing massacres abroad and navigating emotional pain close to home. Her ministry and humanitarian work have expanded her capacity to embrace others' suffering, but humanity seems increasingly unable to handle it. We've resorted to two coping strategies: warring for removal (of pain), or seeking relief (from pain). Both can be necessary, but between them lies a sacred space few enter - where God is present because of pain, not despite it. Where He allows pain to speak rather than immediately silencing it.

Pain tells stories. But few of us sit with pain asking what it's trying to say. Dr. Paul Brand's work with leprosy patients revealed something counterintuitive: pain is actually a gift. Leprosy doesn't cause rotting flesh - it numbs pain sensation so patients injure themselves unknowingly. Brand also observed that affluent societies gaining ability to limit suffering lose ability to cope with what remains, while those familiar with hardship develop remarkable endurance.

Could listening to what pain tells us actually become our medicine? The same Jesus who healed also chose to remain in pain through crucifixion. In that sacred space where we fellowship with both pain and God, we discover He's closer in our suffering than when removing it. There we understand how Christ's embraced pain became healing for us, and there we're transformed into who God intended.

Could you redefine your relationship with pain? Befriend it, rather than antagonise it? And for those helping others - could you become a pain interpreter rather than a rescuer, helping people listen to what their pain is trying to tell them?
