Ahmad Shah Massoud, famously called the “Lion of Panjshir”, was Afghanistan’s most prominent anti-Taliban commander. His killing changed the course of the war in Afghanistan—just two days before 9/11.
📍 When & Where
Date: 9 September 2001
Place: Khvajeh Baha od Din, Takhar Province, Afghanistan
Context: Massoud was leading the Northern Alliance against the Taliban regime.
🎥 How the Assassination Happened
Two men posed as journalists seeking an interview.
They carried a bomb hidden inside a video camera.
During the interview, the device was detonated.
Massoud was fatally wounded and died shortly after.
🧠 Who Was Behind It
The attackers were members of Al-Qaeda.
They acted with Taliban cooperation.
The operation was ordered by Osama bin Laden to:
Remove the Taliban’s strongest military opponent
Prevent Massoud from supporting the U.S. after the coming 9/11 attacks
⏱️ Why the Timing Mattered
Massoud had warned Western governments earlier in 2001 about a major Al-Qaeda attack being planned.
His death occurred 48 hours before the 11 September attacks in the U.S.
With Massoud gone, the Taliban believed the Northern Alliance would collapse.
🌍 Impact & Aftermath
Instead of collapsing, the Northern Alliance regrouped.
After 9/11, they became the main ground partner of the U.S.
Within weeks, the Taliban regime fell (November 2001).
Massoud became a national martyr in Afghanistan.
