Amazing Friendly Humpback Whale Encounter Near Farallon Islands

Oceanic Society whale watchers on April 16 and April 17, 2023 were treated to unbelievable encounters with two friendly humpback whales near the Farallon Islands, west of San Francisco. The whales were seen in the same location on both days, 6-8 miles west of the Farallon Islands, about 2,000 feet off the edge of the Continental Shelf. The whales spent at least an hour peacefully interacting with and inspecting the boat and its passengers as we sat idle. Jared Davis, captain of the Salty Lady (who also captured this video clip), described the experience as an "unbelievable friendly whale encounter. Right up there with the best I’ve seen."
