The Telangana government is set to take a major administrative decision regarding the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), with February 10 emerging as the key deadline for restructuring the civic body. Official orders for the division of GHMC into three separate municipal corporations are expected to be issued on the same day, coinciding with the end of the current GHMC executive committee’s term.

According to sources, the government plans to divide GHMC into three new corporations — Serilingampalli, Hyderabad, and Malkajgiri — to ensure better governance and faster urban development in the capital region. Once the reorganization is formally announced, elections to the new municipal corporations must be conducted within six months, meaning the election process is expected to be completed by August.

Move Aimed at Administrative Convenience...

The decision comes as part of broader efforts by the state government to accelerate the development of Hyderabad and improve administrative efficiency. Over the years, GHMC has expanded significantly, especially after the merger of 27 municipalities located within the Outer Ring Road into the civic body. At one point, there were discussions about GHMC becoming the largest municipal corporation in the country. However, the government now believes that dividing the corporation will make governance more efficient and responsive.

Officials say aligning municipal administration with police jurisdictions will also help ensure smoother coordination. Recently, the state government reorganized police commissionerates in the capital region, restructuring Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Rachakonda commissionerates. Rachakonda was converted into Malkajgiri commissionerate, and there are also proposals for a new Future City commissionerate.

Corporations to Align with Police Commissionerates...

The new municipal corporations are expected to follow similar jurisdictional boundaries:

Serilingampalli Corporation in areas under Cyberabad Commissionerate

Hyderabad Corporation in areas under Hyderabad Commissionerate

Malkajgiri Corporation in areas under Malkajgiri Commissionerate


This alignment is expected to enhance coordination between civic and law enforcement agencies for better service delivery and urban management.

Administrative Preparations Underway...

As part of the reorganization process, the government has already initiated administrative changes. In recent IAS transfers, Vinaya Krishna Reddy and Srujan were posted to GHMC as Additional Commissioners. Sources indicate that the current GHMC Commissioner is likely to continue in Hyderabad Corporation, while Srujan may be appointed to Serilingampalli and Vinaya Krishna Reddy to Malkajgiri as special commissioners.

With February 10 set as the deadline for issuing formal orders, the restructuring of GHMC is expected to mark a significant shift in the governance of Hyderabad’s metropolitan region, paving the way for decentralized administration, improved civic services, and faster urban development.
