The Snoppa Vmate – if you ask me – this is the only palm sized gimbal with camera which is worth comparing to the DJI Osmo Pocket.
This form factor in particular is getting interesting – and this year there have been a number of devices of that kind to prove that point – the Xiaomi Fimi Palm, the Feiyu-Tech’s Pocket, etc.

The approach that Snoppa show here is very different to every other device of that kind that you know – absolutely no buttons, except the power button. Everything is operated through the touch screen – which is both the greatest strength and weakness at the same time. Greatness – because the display gives you better flexibility. Weakness – because there are people, whose thumb is almost as big as the 1.22’’ screen.
Some technical specs: In short – very decent hardware for its size! And in my opinion – the only similarly sized device that truly challenges the optics of the DJI’s Pocket cam gimbal: the sensor inside is 1 / 2.3 inches – with f / 2.0 – fixed aperture – and sounds like the same specs as the DJI Osmo Pocket. As for the processor – Snoppa disclose only that it’s based on cortex A53 cores, and that points to Ambarella processor, likely the H2; This is my guess of course, but it definitely is an Ambarella processor – a company which used to supply GoPro with their SoCs until recently. This is overall quite a good hardware choice, and Snoppa claim up to 200mbit bitrate in 4K at 60fps. Three-axis stabilization; We mentioned the WiFi, Bluetooth, the beautiful 1.22 inch screen, 160-minute battery life, no tripod mount screw, no easy fit for external mic, only 118g of weight, smart tracking, and advanced focusing system! And while the autofocus was awesome, I never managed to make the tracking work.
The panning is up to 400 degrees – more than any other pocket camera gimbal. There’s no D-cinelike or flat color mode – but you can still do a lot of color grading in post production. However – looks like between the different firmware versions there are significant differences between the color science applied – and this makes me think Snoppa are still in search for the best color balance. Let’s hope they really have the flat mode in mind. There is no tripod thread, and this is such a shame!
The controls: Swiping actions control most of it. Swipe right – and you can access the modes – video, photo, panorama, slow motion. Swipe up – and you can control the resolution, frames per second, and so on. Nice to see 24 and 25FPS besides the standard 30 frames per second.
Now, let’s comment on the stabilization and the footage quality. Clearly better than the Feiyu Tech;s Pocket, where we are waiting for decent firmware to improve the operation. The Vmate is almost as good as the Fimi Palm and the DJI Osmo Pocket – so it is really good. I am actually impressed with the autofocus performance – it actually feels better than the osmo pocket in similar conditions, and also – tends to deblur the background a little nicer, at least in my opinion.
