When Alieu Kosiah was found guilty by the Federal Criminal Court in Switzerland last month he became the first Liberian to be convicted of war crimes in Liberia’s civil wars. It was a landmark case that justice activists claim is a victory for hundreds of thousands of victims.
Kosiah, who was a commander of the Ulimo rebel group, has denounced the conviction and made unsubstantiated claims that witnesses in the case were coached to lie by justice activists.
As Anthony Stephens reports, victims of Kosiah’s crimes in Foya District say they are happy for his conviction. But they are afraid that his sentence, including 6 years served, will see him back in Liberia in just 14 years.
