Despite all the mainstream parties' attempts to either ignore or demonise Nigel Farage, British voters weren't put off voting for the self-styled insurgent and his anti-EU, anti-immigration platform.

Labour discovered it was far from immune to the Farage factor and lost heartland seats in the local polls and fell to second place in the EU election.

David Cameron's Conservatives took a good kicking in both polls but it could have been much worse and there was no apparent panic in the ranks.

But spare a thought for Nick Clegg who is now the leader of, well, not very much.

And just a word for the Greens, who came ahead of the Lib Dems in the European elections despite being virtually ignored throughout the campaign.
