This is how a betta fish behaves when he's THRIVING not just surviving in a bowl. Betta fish are very active and need a minimum 2.5 gallon filtered tank, preferably 5 gallons with a heater set between 76 - 82F because they are TROPICAL FISH. You can not safely heat anything under 2.5 gallons. Betta fish live in rice paddies, not puddles. Each section of a paddy can be minimum 5 - 10 gallons or more. People say wild bettas live in puddles, but if they ever do, it's during the dry season and many of them die.
Fish create ammonia, a toxic chemical that burns their gills and body, through breathing and going to the bathroom. If they lived in a 1 gallon bowl, they would need two (2) 100% water changes A DAY. No one (especially your fish!) wants to change their fishes water 2 times a day, or even once a day, but that would be the only way to keep your fish from harm.
If your betta fish has clamped fins (fins that looks like they just stick together) or don't move much, it's most likely because they are stressed and cold. If your fish is continually stressed and cold, their immune system is compromised and they will get sick. A happy, healthy betta fish will have all his fins splayed out when he's not swimming around and being a big old wiggly butt. If your fish is hard to photograph cuz he's constantly moving, that's a good sign!
So in conclusion, get your fish out of that dirty bowl/vase/jar and get him into a nice warm clean 2.5 or more gallon tank! They are very curious fish with huge personalities! Their color will brighten and come out when they're happy and warm! You will NOT regret it, I promise you.
PS. This is Reginald, Reggie for short, who lives in a 10 gallon filtered heated tank with 2 snails. He wants to eat the algae wafer I dropped for my snails. :)
