Narrativization of Cebuano Street Food in 'Street Food Asia'
This paper argues that David Gelb and Brian McGinn‘s Cebu episode of Street Food Asia, which features Cebuano delights such as nilarang bakasi, lechon, tuslob-buwa, and lumpia is a narrativization of Cebuano food and not a preeminent cultural representativeness nor a complete incorporation of the variegated food culture within the Philippines. Cebuano food is imbued with gastronomic simplicity which reflects the practical and adaptable culture relating more with the realities of the archipelagic region, and the challenge brought by fledgling human conditions. Hence, none of these are said to exceptionalize Cebuano food nor the region, contrary to some remarks from cultural gatekeepers who viewed Cebuano street food as not quintessentially Filipino. Instead, the Cebuano dishes that were featured in the docuseries are part of the project of finding exciting, fresh, and unmentioned delights across Asia. Narrativization of food compliments with one of the objectives of the producers to present inspirational stories that resonate with most viewers. Further, it re-focuses food culture on the makers of the cuisine themselves and their experiences. This includes human-interest stories.
