Immigration is a deeply entrenched and polarizing political issue in the United States. For decades, American discourse on immigration has been dominated by a fearful narrative that highlights an open southern border, migrant caravans, and purported increases in crime and economic instability. In their book The Border Within, economist Tara Watson and journalist Kalee Thompson shift the conversation to examine the implications of America’s interior enforcement policies. The book critically evaluates the human and economic effects of these policies, questioning their effectiveness and highlighting the contributions of non-native Americans to various aspects of American life, including labor force dynamics, social welfare programs, and tax revenue.
Join Williams College Professor Tara Watson for a panel discussion about her book with Damon Jones, Associate Director of the Stone Center, and Rene Flores, Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Chicago. This event aims to provoke critical thought on the humanity and effectiveness of American immigration policies in light of their economic consequences.
