A lesser known philosopher of religion, Rudolf Otto, wrote about these ineffable moments of awe, terror, rapture, and delight that many of us experience in nature. They find us when we are not looking; often presenting as streams of sunlight through clouds, trillions of dancing stars, a leviathan-like storm. In that moment we may feel lost in another world, whether we are religious or not, a world of profound mystery and beatitude. These are none other than “numinous experiences” and they speak to the wholly other nature of God, the part which our rational minds cannot grasp.
